Ben Mann Bio

Ben Mann’s illustrative style results from  childhood passion for cartooning. He studied the works of accomplished caricature artists and recognized that the deceptively simple lines were in fact marks of great skill. Distilling subjects down to their essentials is part of his trademark look, and he delights in “seeing just how little detail I can get away with. My quest is to describe, not define, my subjects.”

A Pacific Northwest native, Mann observes that the cool climate incubates creative souls, and locals are quick to respond to artwork that brightens their day. His “contemporary folk art” features upbeat subjects, rendered in bold lines and a scandalous color palette. “Folks use a variety of adjectives to describe my artwork. ‘Subtle’ isn’t one of them.”

To date, his licensing successes have been in the arenas of calendars, cards and housewares. In addition to studio painting, Mann enjoys sketching on location, as well as leading painting workshops in public elementary schools.
